Buffers in Wars
by Ute Carson

Childrens eyes agape in astonishment.
Why is our house crumbling?
People running and screaming?
Hold my hand, Mama!
Stay, Daddy!
Wheres kitty?
Grown-ups calm as best as they can,
hoping to instill resilience.
Are scars indelible?
Only if arms are spread like wings
enfolding vulnerable little ones
can adults shelter the children
from nightmares and lifelong fears.
